Dexter Choy, PhD
Dr. Dexter J.L. Choy is Professor Emeritus at the School of Travel Industry Management, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He specializes in tourism policy and planning, travel marketing, and tourism development in the Asia-Pacific region. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics, M.A. in Economics, M.B.A. and B.B.A. Dr. Choy has served in both administrative and instructional positions at the School for over forty years. He received the 2009 TIM Teaching Award of Excellence presented by TIM International, the alumni association of the School. From 2009-2015, he served as Graduate Chair for the Masters Program in Travel Industry Management.
Dr. Choy's research has encompassed airline pricing, travel agency and tour operations, tourism forecasting, tourism planning and development, travel marketing, and hotel operations. His research has been published in the top tourism journals, and he has coauthored two textbooks. He has been a project director and conducted studies on tourism in Hawai‘i, Asia, and the Pacific islands funded by the State of Hawai‘i Office of Tourism, East-West Center Pacific Islands Development Program, United States Agency for International Development, and the United States Department of Commerce, Economic Development Agency.
In addition to his research and teaching at the university, Dr. Choy has been an economist for the United States Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. He has been an advisor and consultant on tourism development and travel/hospitality operations for Asian and Pacific governments as well as private companies. Since 1981, he has consulted and conducted executive seminars throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The topics have ranged from Strategic Planning to Strategic Marketing and Product Development in the travel industry. The venues ranged from Pacific islands such as the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands; to Northeast Asia including China, Hong Kong, Taipei and Macao; all of Southeast Asia; South Asia including India and Sri Lanka; and Vietnam in Indo-China.
Throughout the years, Dr. Choy has been an invited conference speaker, made presentations and provided assistance to various government tourism organizations, universities and professional associations throughout the Asia-Pacific region. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies, and lectured at Nankai University in Tianjin, China as part of a technical exchange program sponsored by the United Nations Development Program. From 2010-13, he conducted training sessions for staff of the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority in the United Arab Emirates.
